It’s one of the oldest kind of Cossack bread which usually was cooked in the field when Cossacks were campaigning or were lying in ambush. For cooking the Cossack flat dry shortckes “Zagreby” our ancestors were taking any kind of flour which they had at that time (buckwheat or wheat) and made a dough. They made little shortcakes which they placed on the hearthstone of the Cossack stove “kabytsya”. From above the dough was dusted that is powdered with ashes. That is why the flat dry shortcakes were called “Zagreby”.
